Furniture to Slipcover

Many different kinds of upholstered furniture can be slipcovered. However, some styles can be covered with better results than others. Living room chairs that have a separate seat cushion work well because the cushion helps keep the cover in place. If there is no seat cushion, the slipcover will require a little more attention to keep it looking tidy. Pieces that have tufting may require additional work if you want to minimize the look of the tufting on the finished chair. Generally, leather or vinyl pieces are more difficult to cover successfully because the base material is slippery. Dining chairs / barstools will require the seat cover to be tied or otherwise fastened to the chair to keep it in place.

Choosing Fabric

This is the fun part! And if you purchase from a good fabric store, the staff should be able to assist you to make a good choice. Here are some things to consider…

  • Texture and weight - the easiest fabrics to work with are 100% cottons with little texture, like duck cloth, denims, or heavier twills. Painters' dropcloth is another great option. An 8oz. weight works well and enables me to include dressmaker details such as ruffles, pleated trim, etc. Chenilles and upholstery fabrics are usually a heavier texture and can be more difficult to work with when multiple layers of fabric come together.
  • Color and pattern - the larger the print, the more fabric will be required to match the print. A solid color with little obvious texture will require little matching. Also consider if piping/trim will be the same as the rest of the chair or of a contrasting fabric.
  • Amount - Contact me with your proposed project and I can help you determine how much fabric will be required.
